Ghent specialities and gifts to take home

An elderflower-flavoured drink, containing 15 percent alcohol and bottled in round bottles bedecked in elegant flowers. An ideal aperitif, cocktail or even as an accompaniment for dessert. RoomeR is 100% natural Belgian craftsmanship. (Match Supermarket, Shopping center Zuid, Woodrow Wilsonplein 4)

Gruut Beer

Ghent delicacies (sweets and cookies)

The best known local ones are the Cuberdons (or noses), made of Arabic gum and raspberry juice (originally they used elderberry juice), Mokken en Knopkes (cookies). The other kinds you can try out are: Ruitjes, Poepkes, Punaizen, Maria’s, Toverballen, Kruiskes, Kloefkes, Wippers, Munteklontjes, Lutsepoepe, Zure Tuutjes, Beezekes, Fruithartjes, Wissel-agentjes, Belga’s, Begoniatjes, etc.

You can find all of the above delicacies at a 17th century tiny store called Temmerman (Kraanlei 79)

Tierenteyn Mustard

Mustard exists in a broad variety, but Tierenteyn Verlent is a variety which you have to try out. Just go inside, pick out a size of bowl and they will fill it up with mustard. The barrel is standing beside the counter and is filled with freshly made mustard, direct from the cellar. The mustard is quite strong with a very honest taste. The shop is here since 1790 and I don’t know anybody who was disappointed after buying something here.

If you wish to take some home for yourself, friends or family and if you´re travelling by plane, make sure not to put it in your hand luggage. Not because the mustard is dangerous, but because it´s considered as liquids.

After trying out Tierenteyn Mustard you will never think of Dijon anymore when thinking of mustard (Groentenmarkt 3)
