POWERFUL LEARNING 2: YOUNG PEOPLE IN DEVELOPMENT
In this course unit, we focus on how children develop and what the major milestones and mechanisms are in their development from childhood through adolescence, in various domains of mental and behavioural development. We focus on what is important to know and to understand as a teacher, in order to optimize the conditions for learning, and to support pupils in their path of learning. It is a combination of developmental psychology, educational psychology, and instructional psychology. We use The psychology of great teaching (de Bruyckere, Hulshof & Missine, 2021) as a basic textbook.
In this course unit, the following aspects will be discussed: the concepts of nature and nurture and how they influence each other, how personality develops and which dimensions characterize a person, which kinds of attachment exist between children and caregivers (and how this evolves), the development of mental skills, executive mental functions, moral reasoning and Theory of Mind (and in what way you can strengthen these skills in your classroom), what intelligence encompasses (how it is measured, how it is influenced, and what can be inferred from it), physical and sexual development, social development (including socialization, parenting styles and teaching styles), and behavioural economics (how people use heuristics and make fallacies, but also how we can influence behaviour and decision-making).
We also discuss the regulations regarding the provision of learning support, pupil guidance, and care for pupils in education. We analyse factors influencing the social-emotional wellbeing of pupils and adolescents (including failure anxiety, mental disturbances, and physical disabilities), and what schools and teachers can do to support the wellbeing. We help you understand how action-focused diagnostics work.
