Your baby is expected to be born from 37 weeks to 42 weeks gestation, so three weeks before and two weeks after your due date. Childbirth usually begins with contractions that keep coming a little quicker and become more painful as time goes by (labour). Sometimes the membranes rupture first and the contractions come later on.
If you have painful contractions regularly (every 10 to 5 minutes), lose amniotic fluid, blood or the so-called mucus plug, you should consult your midwife or doctor by telephone. They will then advise you what to do and where to go.
Do not go to the hospital alone. Your husband, partner, friend or family member should take you there. If nobody is around, call a taxi or an ambulance (discuss this with your midwife or doctor).
