In short
Five schools—from special education to secondary and primary education—are collaborating with a design team to green their playgrounds. Through co-creation with students, teachers and the local community, these spaces are being transformed into nature-rich and stimulating play and learning environments.
Need and relevance
Many playgrounds consist mainly of concrete, offering limited play opportunities or green spaces. By removing hard surfaces and introducing greenery, this project enhances biodiversity, water management, and overall well-being. It showcases how schools can sustainably redesign their learning and play environments.
From approach to impact
In collaboration with a design team and all stakeholders, playgrounds are being transformed. Concrete makes way for greenery, creating spaces that support both play and education. The renewed playgrounds in Brasschaat, Herne, Merelbeke, Kuurne, and Mechelen serve as inspiring examples of how co-creation leads to sustainable and engaging learning environments.
