Artevelde University College works on research within the theme: the teacher and the school as an organization. Current research focuses on "teachers and school teams who learn from professionals outside their own work context by purposefully collaborating around a shared learning question". Collective learning is of crucial importance in this regard. The research objective is to better understand the motives, preconditions and outcomes of such cooperation at the level of students, teachers (team) and school and how these relate to processes of school development. These insights contribute to the development of a scientifically based vision on the professionalization of teachers, through collaboration with other (education) professionals.

The Support Center for Educational Research (SONO) has been recognized by the Flemish Government as Support Center for Policy-relevant Research for the period 2016-2020. SONO is a partnership of Ghent University, KU Leuven, University of Antwerp, VUB and Artevelde University College.
