How do unconscious biases shape the everyday decisions of future teachers? This Erasmus+ project develops and tests digital learning paths aimed at training teacher education students to make fairer, more conscious decisions in complex situations. The goal is to build a new competence: the ability to manage bias—essential in any profession that requires sound and just decision-making.
Need and relevance
Unconscious bias can influence how future teachers assess and interact with learners. Yet this issue is often overlooked in teacher training programmes. Without strategies to manage bias, well-intentioned decisions may unintentionally perpetuate inequality. There is a clear need for tools and training that support inclusive, unbiased practices in education.
From approach to impact
This international project runs multiple experiments in parallel via a custom-built digital platform. By testing different de-biasing strategies with students and teacher educators in four European countries, we identify what works best in the long term. The project results include:
- a practical guide for educators,
- a free and open online course,
- and a set of validated, evidence-based teaching strategies.
The outcomes support professional development, foster inclusive decision-making, and contribute to a fairer educational landscape and society as a whole.
