Definition of team teaching and need for empirical research

Teamteaching is a collaborative teaching model in which two or more teachers work together in the preparation, teaching and/or evaluation of a lesson/subject. Despite the popularity of teamteaching as a promising strategy - both in research and in teaching practice - there is hardly any empirical evidence convincingly demonstrating the effectiveness of teamteaching. This research project aims to gain theoretical and empirical insights on the effectiveness of team teaching.

Measuring impact of team teaching

Taking into account the gaps in the current state of the art and the clear demand for evidence formulated by the field, this project aims to gain insight into the effects of team teaching on pupils and teachers. To achieve this goal, four lines of research will be initiated:

  1. a large-scale questionnaire survey
  2. a video-based observational study
  3.  a quasi-experimental study
  4. an intervention study

Development of four valorisation products

These lines of research will result in four evidence-based valorisation products that will be developed together with the field:

  1. a Flanders-wide learning network
  2. an online knowledge platform
  3. a professionalisation programme
  4. a white paper with policy recommendations on team teaching

Arteveldehogeschool coordinates and actively participates in this valorisation project.

Looking beyond perception and responding to needs education

Methodologically, this project clearly distinguishes itself from the current research field by large-scale research that goes beyond perception by integrating more direct measurement measures and a quasi-experimental component. Thus, the proposed research lines provide ground-breaking theoretical insights on the (un)usefulness of team teaching.

The intended valorisation products provide answers to urgent needs formulated by the Flemish educational field in general and a diverse and large group of already committed stakeholders in particular.

Partners

In the project, colleagues from Arteveldehogeschool work together with colleagues from the University of Antwerp, Ghent University and AP Hogeschool Antwerp. Estafett is financially supported as a Strategic Basic Research (SBO) project.
