How can you address children in secondary education at the right level of English so that they learn as much as possible? The first step for this is knowing where pupils are in their language development.

This is because the starting situation for English in secondary education varies greatly from one pupil to another. There are various reasons for this, such as pupils' home language, exposure to English through the media, Dutch pupils from the border region who followed English as a second language in Dutch primary education (VVKSO, 2011). In addition, from school year 2017-2018 it will also be possible to offer English in primary education which is likely to increase diversity even more. Indeed, each school can decide whether or not to opt for this.

In order to give teachers a better understanding of pupils' starting competences, within this project we want to develop an orientation test English for the first grade of secondary education that will allow schools and teachers to effectively and efficiently assess pupils' level of English in order to guide each child as adequately as possible.
