Hemp as a sustainable and competitive alternative

The textile industry is not sustainable: processing the main raw materials (polyester and cotton) consumes huge amounts of non-renewable resources and produces waste that is often not recycled. In the context of increasing policy pressure and consumer expectations, hemp fibres offer an excellent opportunity as a more sustainable and economically competitive alternative.

Develop hemp production process in consultation with stakeholders

Hemp4Future aims to develop a process to valorise large volumes of short fibres into high-value yarn for garments. Key stakeholders (i.e. fibre processors and spinners) will be involved in the process development and technical, aesthetic and economic expectations of customers will be taken into account in the design of the prototype.

Is the producer market open to hemp?

Initially, our research aims to map whether the producing market (i.e. fibre processors, spinning mills and weaving mills) is open to using the new raw material hemp.

We want to insightfully map the thresholds but also the levers that can motivate and stimulate the use of hemp in the textile industry (= a mind shift).  In the study, we examine psychological, financial and practical aspects.
