Literature shows that the construction of vocal folds in women differs from that of men: women are more likely to have incomplete vocal fold closure. Since a lot of professional speakers are female, the probability of having an incomplete vocal fold closure is real. If these professional speakers have to speak frequently, this may cause additional vocal strain (overcompensation due to tension).

Within this exploratory research project, we want to conduct a thorough literature study and a survey of the professional field on this topic. We also want to collect data ourselves, namely to explore the effect of different vocal techniques, such as 'vocal fry', on vocal fold closure.
