Persons with dementia experience difficulties in choosing and performing meaningful activities of daily living. However, there is currently no adequate method to realise the participation of persons with dementia in choosing and carrying out meaningful activities.

Shared Decision Making (SDM) is a methodology to give persons more autonomy and involve them in decisions about their health situation. This always takes into account the person's wishes and preferences, alongside the best available scientific evidence. Before this project, however, the concept of SDM had rarely been applied to older people with dementia and had not been explored at all in the search for meaningful activities.

This research project aimed to find out whether SDM is an applicable methodology for Flemish caregivers in the search for and guidance of meaningful activities in persons with dementia.
