Previous research on perception of kidney patients
Over the past three years, Artevelde University College has been conducting research together with Ghent University, AZ Sint-Lucas Gent, UZ Gent, AZ Sint-Elisabeth Zottegem and AZ Glorieux Ronse into the experience of older (65+) and vulnerable hemodialysis patients for whom dialysis is often permanent. is.
Impact of kidney dialysis on daily life
Do your patients often indicate that the impact of kidney dialysis on their day-to-day life is great? Larger than they could have estimated in advance? That they feel tired, experience a lack of time? That they don't get around to meaningful activities? And that they need appropriate information and support at the right time to fit dialysis into their daily lives?
75% of dialysis patients are 65 years or older. Patients receiving dialysis are extensively monitored from a medical and nursing point of view and well informed about and during their treatment. While the impact of dialysis on the patients' daily lives is great, they indicate that they receive too little information to be able to estimate that impact.
They have no idea in advance what their daily life will look like. Dialysis is time consuming, tiring and exhausting, leaving little quality time for essential and meaningful activities. Nevertheless, meaningful, daily activities have a major impact on the quality of life of people with a chronic condition.
Tailor-made advice about incorporating dialysis into daily life
They believe that more attention to advice on how to fit dialysis into their daily lives would be very useful. A first step can be to provide correct and accurate information when it is needed. A brochure is not always of much use to them because it does not respond to the specific needs at a certain moment. So what can help them forward?
Smart technology support
In the current research project at Artevelde University College, we want to find solutions in co-creation with patients and their entourage so that they can receive personalized information when they need it. In this phase of our research we explore technological possibilities. Could we help the patients and their entourage via smartphone, tablet or computer? Imagine if they could ask their questions to a voice assistant: "Siri, what should I do?" Can you help me with…”
