Barometer 'Technology (in) Your Care?'

Research - expertise centre Health and Care

From artificial intelligence to telehealth and digital patient records, technology is transforming the way care is organized and delivered. Through the 'Technology (in) Your Care?' Barometer, we give healthcare professionals a voice and gather insights into their experiences, needs, and expectations regarding technology in daily clinical practice.

Barometer Technologie in jouw zorg

How do healthcare professionals experience technology in their daily practice?

Technology plays an increasingly important role in healthcare. Yet, we still know too little about how healthcare professionals experience this evolution.

Through the ‘Technology (in) Your Care?’ barometer, we map out how healthcare professionals currently use technology, the added value they perceive, the challenges they encounter, and the support they require. We do this by means of a large-scale survey and interviews with healthcare professionals.

In this way, we give healthcare professionals a voice in the digital transformation of healthcare. The results are intended to help organizations, educational institutions, developers, and policymakers better align technology with the needs of actual practice.

Barometer 'Technologie (in) jouw zorg'

Why this barometer?

Technology offers opportunities to support healthcare, yet its impact varies significantly across sectors, organizations, and roles.

To successfully implement technology, it is important to understand:

  • which technologies healthcare professionals are familiar with and currently use;
  • what barriers and concerns exist in the workplace;
  • what competencies and support are required;
  • what expectations healthcare professionals have for the future.

With this barometer, we aim to systematically gather and highlight these insights.

For who?

The barometer is aimed at healthcare professionals directly involved in the care of clients or patients in Flanders.

We specifically focus on the following professional groups:

  • audiologists/hearing aid specialists
  • dietitians
  • occupational therapists
  • physiotherapists
  • speech therapists
  • dental hygienists
  • orthoptists/optometrists
  • podiatrists
  • medical imaging technologists
  • nurses
  • midwives
  • care assistants

What do we research?

Use of technologies

Which technologies are present in the workplace today? Which ones are actually being used?

Experiences and added value

In what ways does technology support healthcare professionals in their daily work?

Challenges and barriers

What technical, organizational, or personal factors make using technology difficult?

Competencies and support

What knowledge, skills, and support do healthcare professionals need to use technology successfully?

Future outlook

How do healthcare professionals view the further digitalization of healthcare?

A voice from the field

Discussions about technology in healthcare often focus on possibilities and innovations. Less frequently are the experiences of healthcare professionals themselves directly sought out.

This barometer is grounded in daily practice. The experiences of healthcare professionals serve as the starting point for recommendations regarding technology, training, support, and implementation.

Periodic follow-up

The aim is to repeat the barometer every two years. This allows us to track trends in:

  • technology usage
  • attitudes towards technology
  • training needs
  • implementation challenges
  • new technological developments

This creates a long-term picture of the digital transformation within the Flemish healthcare sector.
