1-2-3-MOVE! Co-created actions for motor competence to kickstart developmental trajectories of 1 to 3-year-old Flemish toddlers

How can we improve toddlers’ motor and risk competence? Together with experts and practitioners, we develop practical initiatives for home and childcare, based on research into Flemish toddlers aged 1 to 3.

In short

Toddlers in Flanders appear to be moving less, which can hinder their motor development. This study maps the motor and risk competence of 1- to 3-year-olds and examines influencing factors, such as family characteristics, physical environments, and interactions with parents or childcare providers. Using these insights, we co-create initiatives with practitioners and policymakers to give toddlers more opportunities to move and develop, both at home and in childcare settings.

Need and relevance

The decline in motor skills among toddlers is concerning and may affect their overall development. Movement and the ability to take risks are crucial for learning and growth at a young age. This research responds to the urgent need for quality movement opportunities for toddlers, providing solutions for parents and childcare providers alike.

From approach to impact

In collaboration with Ghent University and Vrije Universiteit Brussel, we investigate toddlers’ motor development and the factors that shape it. These include physical environments, family circumstances, and interactions with caregivers. Together with practitioners and policymakers, we develop practical tools and initiatives to support toddlers in exploring their abilities. The results offer valuable insights and solutions for families, childcare organisations, and policymakers, contributing to healthier, more active early childhood development in Flanders.
