Climate Education Guideline
Extreme weather and failing climate policies top the list of major risks threatening the global order (WEF, 2020). It is remarkable that not the climate crisis, but the failing climate policy is mentioned. Climate policy means that democratic and political choices must be made for a sustainable future. To this end, we want to train children with Education for Sustainable Development (EDO). ESD comprises learning processes that teach students competences to consciously and actively make choices through dialogue (conversations, debate and discussion).
The importance of ESD, and therefore also climate education, cannot be overestimated. Within the Flemish educational landscape there is a need for tools that can support teachers in these complex learning processes. The climate education guideline aims to provide educational actors with guidance and inspiration regarding climate education. The guideline will clarify which climate content and methodologies are best used to achieve high-quality climate education. For example, this guideline will indirectly contribute to Flemish climate objectives by arming target groups with the necessary capacities (knowledge, skills, attitudes and insights) to tackle complex sustainability issues, such as climate change, and to be able to make conscious choices based on involvement to contribute to solutions. for the climate challenge.
The project staff will develop this climate guideline through an extensive science-based literature study and an iterative and co-creative design process with all stakeholders (climate experts, teachers and school boards, teacher educators, Department of Environment, ESD experts, developmental psychology experts, etc.).
