One of the main policy recommendations from previous co-funded research was the introduction of a route planner in pupil guidance for vulnerable pupils (Meirsschaut, Monsecour, Verslijcke & Malfliet, 2016). This is a kind of pathway or transition coach who 'monitors' the thread throughout the pupil's school career and forms the bridge between pupils, parents and school.

Following this research, Edith Stein comprehensive school and the VCLB Region Ghent realised this recommendation through the pilot project Routeplanner. A project that came about with the support of the province of East Flanders. Since its launch in September 2016, around 25 young people have already received guidance from one of the Routeplanners. First, cautiously positive results urgently call for thorough research into the success and risk factors of routeplanner. Especially given the start of the new Pupil Guidance Decree on 1 September 2018, it is additionally necessary to explore what place routeplanner has in the whole of pupil guidance.

End products of this research are therefore a research-based policy report, a role and function description of the routeplanner in the whole of pupil guidance, a toolbox in which the working method of the routeplanner is listed and recommendations to the wider school field in Flanders.
