Integrating STEM into curricula

Societal and socio-economic evolutions call for a redrawing of curricula on goals children should achieve (polls, TIMMS, SERV report). In this pilot project, we therefore want to build on efforts to further strengthen these within the STEM narrative.

Digital STEM education

STEM education is about solving problems within meaningful contexts and doing so through the integrated application of knowledge, skills and attitudes from the various STEM disciplines. In primary education, processes of research, design, optimisation, critical thinking, analysis and cooperation are central to this. Especially in primary education, this starts from real-life situations and is essentially about building STEM literacy (Department of Education & Training, 2015).

To build this literacy, the integration of digital forms of education can offer new opportunities to realise the essential basic objectives and, in addition, differentiate in breadth and depth.

Curriculum module for digital STEM education

The aim of the project is therefore in the first place to strengthen teacher training in the efficient application of digital didactics within STEM in function of creating a powerful learning environment within the diverse classroom.

This will result in the development of an online curriculum module for teacher training in nursery and primary education on this theme and the further professionalisation of the professional field regarding sustainable STEM implementation.

Partners

Three schools are involved as structural partners within the project. These are schools that want to further professionalise their STEM implementation.

In addition, this project takes shape in cooperation with our partners Vives University College, Ghent University, Eeckhout Academy and Artevelde Academy.
