Healing a wound requires specific knowledge and skills. Emergency workers should determine how the wound should be cleaned, whether disinfection is necessary or not and which products to use for this purpose. An appropriate wound dressing should then be selected. However, this is not straightforward as there are many different products on the market. In addition, there is very little evidence available on the effectiveness of the various products.
Within the project 'the digital wound care guide', a tool is being developed that supports care providers in determining a correct wound care policy tailored to an individual patient. After a thorough assessment of the wound and entering various parameters such as, for example, depth and tissue type, the application will provide advice on wound cleaning, the necessary anti-infective measures and wound coverage. Unique advice tailored to the patient will always be provided. In addition, tips are provided on the use of the recommended wound care products during wound treatment.
By using this tool, all caregivers will be able to determine the wound care policy as a wound care expert does. As a result, fewer incorrect choices will be made when determining wound care policy. As a result, the use of incorrect wound care techniques or products will be avoided. In addition to less waste on an ecological and economic level, this will lead to accelerated wound healing and reduce the risk of wound infections.
This two-year project consists of three parts: a market analysis, the development of an online training programme and the development and valorisation of a wound care algorithm.
