This research project started from the principle that bringing together the mastery of educational professionals across the boundaries of ordinary and special education is important in the light of the evolution from an expert model to a partnership model (Mortier, K., 2010).
Our central research question was: How can special education teachers use their accumulated expertise and mindset around inner class differentiation to fulfil their new role as expert/supporter in relation to mainstream education?
During the first research year (2017-2018), the expertise and underlying mindset of 6 schools of special primary education Type of basic provision was mapped (from practice observations around inner classroom differentiation in the learning area Mathematics). Subsequently (2018-2019), practice, mindset and support needs were probed in 3 mainstream primary schools that were in a partnership with one of these BuO schools.
The research team collected and processed all input and translated it into 5 building blocks for expertise sharing and professional collaboration:
- A relational click: focus on knowing and trusting each other
- A professional match: vision and approach based on what unites us
- Focused collaboration: focus on targeting and classroom practice
- Professional language and knowledge: focus on expertise and understanding each other professionally
- Expertise awareness and sharing: focus on learning from each other, boundary crossing
To facilitate expertise sharing and collaboration, the EXPERTO TOOL was developed. The tool is conceived as a 'game board' for two professionals who are at the start of a cooperation process and have a common focus e.g. learning questions around one concrete support need in the classroom (e.g. a teacher and a support worker). According to the developers, the tool also lends itself to HR activities in a team context e.g. in initial coaching, in team teaching or co-teaching) or in evaluation or performance interviews in which expertise development may be highlighted.
This research project aimed to be empowering and inspiring for (aspiring) teachers in inclusive education settings. By making expertise explicit, utilised and connected, the EXPERTO TOOL aims to contribute to a professionally appreciative inclusive education landscape.
