The study participants are selected based on pre-screening using inclusion and exclusion criteria. To examine relevant biomarkers, oral samples are taken by tongue swab. In addition, we also collect data regarding the oral health of the subjects through a clinical oral examination. Finally, a questionnaire is also completed to ascertain data regarding lifestyle, oral hygiene, medical and dental history, etc.
This research builds on a study already conducted by an Amsterdam-based research group to ascertain the composition of the oral microbiome in young, healthy subjects (20-25 years old). Using these data, a standard for a healthy mouth was defined, based on a set of biomarkers detected in samples taken from the oral cavity of the subjects. By now mapping the microbiome of the young-timers and combining it with clinical data from the oral examination and data on (oral) health behaviour, one will be able to draw up a risk profile at an individual level and a related prevention plan. Ultimately, these data could even be used to develop a digital tool that maximises efforts to promote healthy mouth among young-timers. After all, a healthy mouth is a healthy heart!
