Cultivating chickpeas in Flanders

KIKET stands for unleashing local cultivation of chickpeas and fits within the 'realisation protein strategy' project call of the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries.

How can you optimise local cultivation of chickpeas?

Chickpeas are hugely popular these days and have all kinds of different uses, pure or processed, in all kinds of tasty dishes. Currently, however, the cost price of locally grown chickpea is significantly higher than the current world market price due to the small scale of cultivation. To date, the ideal scale of cultivation is not known and so that determination is on the menu of our research.

The KIKET project therefore likes to build on the knowledge of the KIK-Love project on optimising Flemish chickpea cultivation. We also want to investigate the willingness of the chain to switch to Flemish chickpea, as well as the willingness to pay and the application possibilities in order to determine the ideal scale.

A total of €232,211.89 is needed for this, of which each partner co-finances 20% (i.e. €185,769.51 is subsidised). The budget of Delhaize De Leeuw was not included because they will fully bear their costs themselves.

The probable date of publication of the results expected from the supported project is March 2024. We will also communicate these results through this project page. The results of the supported project will be available free of charge to all enterprises operating in the specific agricultural or forestry sector or subsector concerned. The results will remain available on the internet for at least five years from the end date of the supported project.
