Lean process optimization for file delivery and processing at small printing companies

In addition, business leaders have often grown from the work field and do not necessarily have an extensive background in business economics. As a result, innovation is often technical in nature, and little attention is paid to the possibilities of process optimization.

Profit can be made, especially in the field of file delivery and file processing. Printing companies are increasingly working on small orders from private individuals, which are supplied in many formats and in many ways. This requires many manual steps on the part of the printing company, which are not structurally mapped out, let alone calculated.

The principles of lean manufacturing could mean a lot here. This research will therefore analyze the processes in file delivery and processing at a number of printing companies by means of value stream mapping (VSM). The aim is to discover which processes add value and which are 'wasteful'. Suggestions for improvement are formulated and tested.

Based on the analyzes and tests, a generic model for delivery and processing processes at small printing companies will be drawn up. This will take the form of a simplified calculation model, with which small printing companies can get an indication of how much the application of lean processes could save them on the basis of a number of variables.

With this, the project hopes to raise awareness and convince the sector of the benefits of lean manufacturing. The ultimate goal is improved efficiency and competitiveness for the small graphic printing industry in Flanders.
