The Living Lab Hemp+ focuses on developing circular and bio-based products and processes using industrial hemp for the Flemish construction and manufacturing industries. By encouraging co-creation and innovation, it fosters collaboration across the value chain, from cultivation to end products.

Need and relevance

The construction and manufacturing industries face increasing pressure to transition towards a circular economy. Bio-based materials like industrial hemp present a significant opportunity: they are environmentally friendly, fast-growing, and versatile for applications such as insulation, composites, and textiles. However, systemic thinking, circular design, and collaboration across stakeholders are often lacking. The Living Lab Hemp+ addresses this challenge by facilitating cooperation and knowledge sharing to drive sustainable change.

From approach to impact

The Living Lab employs demonstration cases to explore concrete hemp-based applications in the construction and manufacturing sectors. Co-creation is key: by uniting farmers, designers, producers, and end-users, the lab encourages knowledge exchange and the development of new circular products and processes. By bringing together actors from different parts of the value chain in one large vibrant hemp community, a living lab, the project aims to:

• encourage and facilitate hemp cultivation in Flanders and beyond;
• encourage and support, through co-creation, the development of innovative and bio-based products using hemp;
• as well as demonstrate the positive impact on the value chain.
