In short

The European research project METIS develops eportfolio-based interventions to support midwives in their transition into professional practice. It targets final-year students, newly qualified midwives, and their mentors across Belgium, Germany, and Greece.

Need and relevance

Early-career attrition among midwives is high, threatening the quality and continuity of maternity care across Europe. METIS responds to this challenge by offering structured support for career transitions, focusing on digital skills, career guidance, and well-being.

From approach to impact

METIS is developing and testing various innovative ePortfolio-based interventions, tailored to midwifery students, recent graduates, mentors, and employers in Belgium, Germany, and Greece. The focus is on key activities related to job application skills, continuing education, well-being, mentor training, and digital skills. By promoting digital and other supportive career transitions, METIS aims to increase retention and resilience within the midwifery profession. The results will be shared openly, with the aim of broad applicability within and beyond the maternity care sector.
