MOoiZO. A digital platform to support orthodontic patients' oral health.
With MOoiZO, we want to create a digital platform to support the brushing behaviour of adolescents under orthodontic treatment. This is because wearing braces interferes with tooth brushing, which can often give gingivitis (gum inflammation) and caries (cavities) free rein. With the MOoiZO app, we want to counter this by using artificial intelligence to make brushing teeth efficient and fun again!
With MOoiZO, we want to create a digital platform, based on artificial intelligence, to support the brushing behaviour and oral health of adolescents during their orthodontic treatment. For these patients, proper brushing technique is very important, but it is currently only monitored during consultations. Through the MOoiZO app, users will be able to upload three dental photos, taken with their smartphones, every week, which will be analysed and scored by artificial intelligence (AI) for the presence of dental plaque. Based on these scores, users will receive appropriate feedback, allowing them to brush more targeted and maintain their oral health during their treatment. The use of this application will ensure that the treating oral health specialist (orthodontist, dentist or dental hygienist) can work more efficiently during consultations and spend less time repeating the correct brushing technique to the patient over and over again, and is also fully in line with the current trend of maximising the use of teleconsulting in healthcare. Also, patient treatment could be more efficient, as the use of the application could lead to a decrease in the number of progression-inhibiting oral health problems. MOoiZO can thus provide the necessary support to both the oral health specialist and the patient.
The current phase of the project focuses on data collection to further train and optimise the algorithm responsible for recognising dental plaque. To this end, three dental photographs will be taken of the participants (before, during and after plaque tracer) after application of a cheek swab to improve dental imaging. Further optimisation of the cheek swab used is also a side project currently being focused on.
The final goal of this IOF ConnecTT project is to develop a prototype application, which can be further optimised in the next phase.
