Three hatches in youth radicalisation prevention

1. Safe spaces

Creating 'places' with a safe context in youth work, leisure and education with two dimensions:

  • internal: facilitators can discuss delicate issues with young people in a relationship of trust, young people can build a positive network and reconnect with social institutions and freely express their grievances;
  • external: young people are supported to publicly voice their grievances about actual or perceived injustice through legitimate channels, thus reducing the risk of violent expression.

2. Online safety

Prevention of online recruitment of potential terrorists via:

  • workshops for vulnerable young people on cyber awareness, resilience and media literacy;
  • online interventions on closed social media groups to spread alternative narratives there and convince doubting individuals;
  • 'fact' videos with alternative narratives by young people who themselves went through a radicalisation process;
  • media literacy tools related to the prevention of political violence on a website for professionals.

3. Upscaling

Systematisation and dissemination of the alternative prevention models developed by:

  • an analysis of good prevention practices;
  • the development of support tools for professionals;
  • a feasibility study with policy recommendations for local, regional, national and European authorities.
