Potential Unlocked
The societal challenge that this project aims to address is the lack of support for detainees during and after detention that limits employment opportunities for this target group, which in turn leads to a higher likelihood of recidivism. We will look for innovative support options that can help reduce recidivism rates. Many inmates are very keen to move towards entrepreneurship. Currently, there is no single pathway to support prisoners towards entrepreneurship.
Inside detention, detainees are often not given the necessary tools to work on a pathway outside. It makes reintegration very difficult for ex-prisoners and makes it difficult to find and keep a job. There is a need for additional support during and after detention. We want to explore how an innovative pathway that supports prisoners towards entrepreneurship makes sense for prisoners and what it might look like.
We see a number of successful programmes internationally that support detainees towards entrepreneurship. We think that offering this pathway to prisoners, in addition to already existing services, could improve the future prospects of (former) prisoners and thus contribute to a lower risk of recidivism.
