In short
How can social workers and vulnerable citizens move from a safe space to public action? This practice-based research project at Artevelde University of Applied Sciences explores how safe spaces in social work can grow into brave spaces: places where injustice becomes visible and discussable. Together with field partners, the project investigates real-world practices and translates them into concrete tools, such as workshops, a practical guide and professional publications.
Need and relevance
In today’s society, where human rights are under pressure, the need for politicisation in social work is growing. Vulnerable groups need courage, trust and professional support to speak out. Safe spaces offer protection but can also become limiting. This project explores whether they can evolve into brave spaces — environments that support civic courage. There is an urgent need for expertise, actionable frameworks and practical methods to support this transition, both for professionals and participants.
From approach to impact
The project consists of two phases. During the first year, four case studies will be conducted using interviews, participant observation and document analysis. Insights will be compiled into identikits and discussed with experts. In the second year, results will be shared and refined through a tour of Flanders in collaboration with regional networks such as Sterk Sociaal Werk. The outcome will include an interactive workshop with a practical guide, also integrated into social work education. This way, the project strengthens the democratic role of social work and promotes civic engagement in both practice and education.
