This project examines the fascinating world of lateral entrants in primary education! More and more enthusiastic individuals with diverse backgrounds are opting for a career change to education. They bring prior professional experience, a different foundational education, and/or life experience. Our project focuses on two key aspects:

1. First aid in primary education

We aim to understand and enhance the support that teachers without a traditional teaching diploma need to successfully take their first steps in education. We build upon the existing support framework and develop it into a program that provides practical and relevant tools for newcomers.

2. Initial guidance for lateral entrants

We focus on the specific needs of lateral entrants during initial guidance and investigate how we can prevent early attrition in primary education. We compare these needs with those of novice teachers in general and develop insights that can contribute to effective initial guidance. Additionally, we explore the dynamics of lateral entrants within school development and collective learning. How can they, with their diverse backgrounds, make a valuable contribution to the team? How do they find their place, and what exactly is that place?

We explore these questions through focus groups and individual in-depth interviews with lateral entrants, principals, initial guidance providers, and teacher educators.
