In short
We are investigating how blended learning—a combination of online and offline teaching—can be used effectively and efficiently to address the challenges of primary education. This research focuses on teachers in the third grade of primary education. The research is being conducted at various primary schools in Flanders and will run from September 2024 to August 2025.
The need and relevance
Education faces significant challenges. Blended learning can help better support students by encouraging ownership of their learning process and offering differentiated opportunities. It combines classroom and digital learning, allowing students to work more actively and independently, at their own pace, and with more opportunities for formative assessment. Blended learning enables innovation: it offers more flexible teaching in terms of time and place, uses space more efficiently, and helps address teacher shortages. It also offers new ways to adapt learning materials and activities to the needs of each student, from simulations to authentic assignments.
From approach to impact
We analyze existing good practices and investigate which approaches work in primary education and why. Through interviews, observations, and classroom testing, we develop:
• a practical framework with design principles,
• models, and step-by-step plans.
Our goal is not only knowledge development but also direct impact in the classroom. Blended learning can help reduce workload, provide personalized student support, and meaningfully integrate digital tools. With our recommendations, we aim to empower teachers in their practice and contribute to future-oriented education.
