Across borders: internationalisation and cultural intelligence among Flemish SMEs
A comprehensive understanding and use of intercultural competences is an essential, and indeed natural, aspect in general interpersonal communication, and thus also in an international business context, where sustainable transnational relationships can play a key role in building successful entrepreneurship.
With this research, we want to examine the extent to which intercultural competences in SMEs are consciously developed and/or used in a context of globalisation and internationalisation. It is thus not just about pure knowledge about intercultural differences or having international relations, but embraces a broader view of intercultural competence that includes awareness, skills and attitudes. Through in-depth interviews and focus groups, this research also aims to integrate the good practices from the field as well as bundle the needs of SMEs to elaborate certain sub-aspects of intercultural competences, with a view to further advice.
