Looking at science education from Big Ideas transcends the classical division into the subjects of biology, chemistry and physics and the various components such as optics, mechanics, botany, etc. The curriculum is approached from a number of core ideas present within the broad sciences. These ideas reduce sciences to the essence we want to impart to our pupils. In other words, the learning content is no longer central but rather the ways of thinking and core ideas that connect sciences.
The main goal in this research project is to develop an exemplary learning line for primary and secondary education. This will be done on the basis of an integrated vision that starts from working with Big Ideas. Such an exemplary learning line is essential for Flemish education, and more specifically STEM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Mathematics) education.
