In short

This project explores how primary school teachers can recognise and address gender stereotypes while considering the interaction between gender, ethnicity and other dimensions of identity. Together with schools and experts, we develop practical tools that support teachers in creating a gender-sensitive and inclusive school environment.

Need and relevance

Gender stereotypes continue to influence children's opportunities, expectations and choices. For children from minority groups, overlapping stereotypes can have an even greater impact on wellbeing and development. Schools have a key role in fostering environments where respect, inclusion and equal opportunities are embedded in daily practice. This research therefore adopts an intersectional perspective that acknowledges the diversity of children's experiences and identities.

From approach to impact

We begin with an international exchange of knowledge and good practices on gender-sensitive education. Schools and experts then co-create a Teacher Toolbox containing:

checklists for gender-sensitive and diversity-aware interactions;
classroom learning activities;
a digital learning pathway for teachers;
practical guidelines for building an inclusive school culture.

These resources are refined through professional learning communities and feedback from minority groups. In parallel, we develop a Train-the-Trainer manual that enables internal school trainers to support colleagues and sustain change. The project delivers practical tools that help schools create inclusive environments, strengthen teachers' gender-sensitive practices and empower children to make choices free from limiting gender stereotypes.
