Digital games in the classroom: support tool for teachers
Digital games increase pupils' extrinsic motivation and engagement and have a positive effect on learning. Yet games are still little used in primary schools. Teachers find it difficult to select suitable educational games and to use them efficiently in lessons to promote learning for all children. To help them do this, we developed a support tool.
Design criteria for digital game in the classroom
Through design-oriented research, we investigated which pedagogical-didactical criteria teachers in upper primary school use when using digital games in the classroom.
In design teams, learning activities with digital (educational) games were designed, realised and evaluated. This led to design criteria for a game activity and a number of practical examples.
Support tool for teachers
This led to the development of a support tool for teachers that game developers and education engagement partners can also use when developing or deploying games. The support tool consists of:
- an instruction manual;
- a game board;
- more than 30 lesson sheets with worked-out examples.
