Eager for growth?

Super-diversity in society and the trend towards inclusive education bring growing complexity to classroom practice. On their own, teachers struggle to find answers to the questions that diversity and inclusion present them with. They feel challenged by it and feel they have to be a superhero to do it all.

Research shows, however, that professionalising together with colleagues and other partners offers many opportunities to meet this challenge effectively. What gives teachers the desire to sharpen their inclusive competences? Who or what supports them in this? What role can online tools play in this regard?

By responding to the conversation starters, you can also share experiences with other schools. The box contains three sets of conversation starters, on three themes:

1. valuing and using diversity in classroom practice;

2. working with pupils and parents; 3;

3. working with colleagues and other partners in and around the school.

A- Each series begins with a starting card to get the conversation going.

B- Then follow question and answer cards to discuss underlying beliefs.

C- Dialogue cards contain working forms to share experiences and consider multiple perspectives.

D- Action cards encourage to plan purposeful actions from the exchange to improve one's own practice.

The quotes and teaching methods on the cards come from a qualitative analysis of a professionalisation project in four Flemish primary and secondary schools participating in the project 'Potential: power to teach all'. At www.potentialtoteach.be you will find even more materials and teaching methods, including an online knowledge centre, frequently asked questions and answers and a teaching package from the film 'Inclusive'. The book 'Full of potential: powerful teaching in diversity' contains the scientific background as well as practical examples.
