Online simulation in healthcare training
Cause
Healthcare schools have embraced simulation as a new form of teaching. Simulation creates a safe and realistic learning environment in which students are challenged to apply their knowledge, improve their technical and communication skills and are invited to reflect on decision-making and collaboration. The corona crisis prompted us to develop online alternatives to hands-on high-fidelity simulation that integrate all the active ingredients of simulation.
Goal
The European Network on Virtual Simulation OnLine (ENVISION) was a two-year strategic partnership aimed at building the 'digital education readiness' of European teachers and students in the use and development of virtual gaming simulation (VGS). Working closely with education experts and a digital technology provider, a high-quality, inclusive digital education methodology was created that ensures simulation best practice standards.
What is Virtual Gaming Simulation?
We choose virtual gaming simulation as online simulation. In VGS, live actors are used as simulation patients to reenact realistic clinical scenarios. Multiple decision moments are built into the scenario where students are challenged in their clinical skills and soft skills. Debriefing helps participants reflect on their learning experience.
Target audience
The VGS and manuals for use in classroom, online or blended education are available in open access free of charge to any interested user, student, teacher or healthcare professional.
Time format
- In the first year of the project, a VGS for students and teachers in home care was developed. "Hello, you must be Flo!" challenges the clinical and communication competencies of nurses and other frontline caregivers. Here's a preview via our teaser!
- In the second project year, a VGS in the setting of a pediatric hospital was created.
Partners
Seven project partners from 6 countries were working together on this project. The project partners are: Ryerson University (Canada), OAMK Oulun Ammattikorkeakouly (Finland) - Joubel (Norway) - URV Universitat Rovira i Virgili (Spain) - LUV Ljudska Univerza Velenje (Slovenia) - Ghent University (Belgium) and Artevelde University College (Belgium - project leader ).
