In short

Artevelde University of Applied Sciences, in collaboration with Leerpunt, is adapting the English-language guide Teacher Feedback to Improve Pupil Learning by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) to fit the Flemish educational context. The guide will be updated with recent evidence-based research on effective feedback. The project targets primary and secondary school teachers in Flanders. By developing feedback strategies that truly work, the project helps teachers accelerate their students' learning process and improve their academic success.

Need and relevance

Although giving feedback is a fundamental part of teaching, research shows that many current feedback practices have little to no effect, resulting in wasted valuable teaching time. Additionally, schools often lack a clear, evidence-based feedback policy. This project aims to support teachers and school leaders in developing effective feedback policies that genuinely enhance student learning. By translating and adapting the EEF guide to the Flemish context, the project offers a solution that is both scientifically sound and practically applicable.

From approach to impact

The project involves a comprehensive adaptation of the guide, incorporating recent Flemish research on feedback strategies. Teachers and school leaders are actively involved through surveys, in-depth interviews, and expert groups. Their input ensures that the guide meets the needs of Flemish schools. The expected outcomes are twofold: teachers will gain insights into effective feedback techniques and learn to avoid practices that do not work. This will allow them to use their limited time more efficiently and improve student learning outcomes. In the long term, the project aims to contribute to a school-wide, evidence-based feedback policy.
