In short

We investigate how teachers in the final years of primary education can use blended learning effectively and efficiently. We combine classroom teaching with digital learning and explore how technology can meaningfully support teaching practice.

The research takes place in several primary schools in Flanders and focuses on solutions that fit everyday educational practice.

Need and relevance

Primary education faces challenges such as differences between pupils, high teacher workloads and teacher shortages. Digital technology offers opportunities to address these challenges, but technology alone does not automatically lead to better education. Teachers and well-considered teaching methods remain crucial.

Blended learning can contribute to:

  • greater pupil ownership of learning;

  • tailored education and support;

  • more opportunities for ongoing feedback and assessment;

  • flexible learning across time and place;

  • meaningful use of digital learning tools.

We therefore investigate not only which digital applications are available, but above all how teachers can purposefully combine them with classroom teaching.

From approach to impact

We analyse existing good practices and investigate which approaches work in primary education and why. Through interviews, observations and classroom testing, we gather knowledge from educational practice.

Based on these insights, we develop a practical framework with design principles, models and step-by-step guidance. In this way, the research translates new knowledge into concrete support for teachers. We aim to strengthen digital teaching practices, provide better tailored support for pupils and contribute to future-oriented primary education in which technology has a purposeful place.
