In short
KickChick aims to support Flemish farmers in cultivating profitable, high-quality chickpeas in both organic and conventional farming. By forming a participatory farmers’ network, we address technical challenges and foster collaboration with food companies and retailers to create a sustainable local supply chain.
Need and relevance
Chickpeas are increasingly valued for their nutritional and sustainable qualities. While studies like KIKET (2022-2024) have shown the feasibility of Flemish chickpea cultivation, challenges remain in optimising the process. KickChick responds to the growing demand for locally grown chickpeas, promoting sustainable agricultural practices and a resilient food system.
From approach to impact
KickChick connects farmers with stakeholders across the food chain. Key actions include:
Improving cultivation techniques for both organic and conventional farming.
Mapping the Flemish chickpea market, including products and businesses.
Facilitating partnerships between farmers, food processors, and retailers to establish a profitable value chain.
This approach drives innovation in Flemish agriculture, supporting both sustainability and economic growth.
