In short
This research supports Flemish cities and municipalities in developing sustainable food strategies. Local governments are equipped to address key themes such as short supply chains, the protein shift, food environments, public procurement and food governance. By linking them with businesses, civil society and research institutions, the project helps shape a resilient and future-oriented food system.
Need and relevance
Food is a powerful lever to tackle societal challenges: climate, health, poverty and the local economy are all connected through the food system. Yet many local governments lack the knowledge or capacity to integrate this structurally into policy. This project responds by connecting fragmented initiatives, stimulating cooperation and making best practices widely accessible.
From approach to impact
The project team brings together expertise from policy, practice and research. The approach combines:
Online labs for inspiration and practical tools
Individual mentoring tailored to local authorities
Pioneers’ groups and regional food days to deepen cooperation
A Flemish food day as a final highlight to embed knowledge and commitments
The expected impact: more local food strategies, stronger inter-municipal collaboration and a sustainable embedding of food in both Flemish and local policy. In this way, Flanders moves towards a coherent and future-proof food transition.
