In short

Sit2FIT investigates how Flemish organisations can sustainably reduce sedentary behaviour among office workers and encourage more physical activity in the workplace.

Drawing on insights from behavioural science, we work with organisations, providers of physical activity solutions and external prevention services to understand why initiatives succeed in some organisations but not in others.

The research team develops three practical tools:

  • an organisational scan that maps sedentary behaviour, physical activity and the behavioural determinants that influence them;

  • an advisory tool that helps organisations select suitable actions and solutions;

  • an inspiration guide with practical recommendations and examples.

Need and relevance

Prolonged sitting is part of the everyday working environment of many office workers. Organisations are increasingly investing in health promotion and workplace wellbeing, yet it is not always clear which measures best match their employees and working context.

Sit2FIT investigates the factors that influence sedentary behaviour and physical activity and explores how organisations can respond to them effectively. In this way, we build practice-oriented knowledge about behaviour change and prevention in the workplace. This knowledge helps organisations make evidence-informed choices rather than selecting isolated actions without knowing how well they fit their context.

From approach to impact

Using an organisational scan, we map current sitting and physical activity behaviour among office workers and identify the behavioural determinants that influence it. Based on these insights, we develop and test an advisory tool that helps organisations select interventions suited to their employees and working environment.

We develop the approach through co-creation with organisations, providers of physical activity solutions and external prevention services. This allows us to investigate which solutions are feasible and useful, and under which conditions they can support lasting behaviour change.

We translate the research findings into an accessible website and an inspiration guide. In doing so, we make new practice-oriented knowledge widely available and support Flemish organisations in reducing sedentary behaviour and promoting physical activity, workplace wellbeing and health.
