The European Language Portfolio (ELP) is a successful example of education, particularly language education, that is harmonized across borders. It facilitates greater mobility during the school career, enhances the visibility of multilingualism in Europe, and promotes social cohesion. We see many opportunities in a digital implementation of the ELP.
In short
This research draws on the European Language Portfolio (ELP) and, together with international partners, is developing the Vabiola App. This app enables monitoring and strengthening the linguistic and intercultural development of students aged 6 to 18, in both formal and informal contexts.
Need and relevance
Students need recognition for all their language experiences, even outside the school context. Traditional assessment methods often fail to adequately consider multilingual and intercultural competences. A digital approach can foster greater engagement, self-reflection, and dialogue between school and home. This project addresses the need for sustainable, accessible tools that approach linguistic diversity as a valuable asset.
From approach to impact
This research analyzed e-ELPs and conducted a literature review on the benefits of an app for the ELP. The results are:
- encouraging the comprehensive and continuous monitoring of students,
- valuing formal and informal learning,
- offering opportunities for the diversity of school and family cultures,
- supplementing traditional assessments and certificates by recognizing multilingual competencies,
- encouraging students to self-direct and self-evaluate,
- facilitating contact between parents and teachers,
- raising awareness of the challenges of multiculturalism,
- providing leverage for developing intercultural mediation skills,
- making it more accessible, sustainable, fun, and interactive through a new digital dimension,
Together with partner institutions, we are developing an app, Vabiola App, that allows us to monitor and value the linguistic and intercultural progress of students aged 6 to 18.
Based on the recommendations of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), Vabiola App aims to offer a modernized, digital version of the European Language Portfolio.
Thanks to the Vabiola App, students will be able to:
- describe and share a language-related experience and select the language skills covered,
- create a profile to build a #languagebiography,
- discover the linguistic and cultural experiences of people in their group.
This project is led by the Academy of Lyon in collaboration with partner institutions: the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes Academic Region (DRAREIC, CASNAV, EAFC), the Lyon INSPE, the Aosta Valley Assessorate, the Dulala Association, the University of Aveiro, the University of Thessalonica, and Artevelde University College Ghent.
This project has been awarded the PFUE label (French Presidency of the European Union) and is supported by the Erasmus+ Agency.
