In short

STEMBASISnet is a Community of Practice & Development (CoP&D) that connects teachers, teacher trainers, researchers, and businesses. The network facilitated expertise exchange through practical examples and research findings. Researchers from Vives, UCLL, Arteveldehogeschool, Thomas More, and Odisee collaborated with STEM academies to organise regional training programmes. These initiatives and a broader systematic approach support teachers in embedding STEM sustainably in classrooms and schools.

Need and relevance

STEM education is vital to prepare students for a rapidly changing society, yet its implementation remains challenging for many schools. STEMBASISnet bridges the gap by combining practice-based and scientific insights, empowering teachers to establish a sustainable STEM culture that benefits students, educators, and schools.

From approach to impact

The approach of STEMBASISnet includes several key components:

  • Dialogue and collaboration: The network facilitated exchanges between practice-based research, scientific insights, practical examples, and coaching to improve STEM quality in Flemish education. This collaboration laid the groundwork for sustainable integration.
  • Regional training programmes: Researchers from Vives, UCLL, Arteveldehogeschool, Thomas More, and Odisee partnered with STEM academies to organise nine training initiatives. These programmes supported teachers in applying STEM both didactically and practically, equipping them to act as STEM coaches and share expertise within school networks.
