Study method

Train your brain! Your programme's learning coach will help you find an efficient and effective study method. You will receive tips about summarising, structuring and realistic planning.

On the 'stop cramming' page, we have compiled many concrete tips, checklists and exercises to help you study.

If you have any further questions, your programme's learning coach will be on hand to help you get started or support you with exam anxiety and procrastination.

Trajectory coaching

Each programme has trajectory coaches who help you map your study route. For example, do you want to choose a diploma-, a credit- or an exam contract? How much credit would be best for you to take? Do you have any exemptions? As a result, you get a tailor-made programme.

The same coaches are available if you require evaluation or motivation. At first, they will mainly focus on your grades, but as you progress, they will also help you find a suitable internship or subject for your thesis.

Tailor-made guidance

A disability should not be a constraint on your studies. That is why we provide personalised guidance to students with special needs.

Artevelde UAS encourages you to tell us about your disability, learning difficulties or long-term health condition as early as possible. It will not affect any application to study here or any other academic review of your work, but it ensures you can benefit fully from all the available support options.

Contact your programme's diversity coach, so we can discuss the specific needs you have and go over the support options we can offer.

Language support

Language skills are a must if you're going for a college degree. Artevelde UAS makes sure you get adequate language coaching. In addition, we offer special programmes for students that aren't native Dutch speakers or have dyslexia.

For everyone

Language coaches

Each programme has a dedicated language coach who can help you with any support you need.

Writing clinic

Do you have a text that's in dire need of an editorial check-up? Our writing coaches at the writing clinic got you covered! Send your copy (max 4 A4s, please) to writingclinics@arteveldehs.be. You'll get individual feedback and some pointers on how to improve your writing skills.

Language courses

Artevelde UAS offers various language courses. Via Dinar, the student platform, there's also an opportunity to register for an online 'train your language' course.

Support for foreign-language students

If Dutch is not your native language, doing a degree in that language can be challenging. You can apply for a special statute and the appropriate education and exam facilities as a foreign-language student. We also provide the necessary language support.

Language buddy

The language buddy project pairs two students during a semester. One student asks for language help, and the other wants to help. The study advice service provides a friendly match according to education, interests and practical possibilities. Use the form.

Amal Gent

Amal Gent supports non-native newcomers with individual guidance, social orientation lessons, guidance to work or education, information on Dutch courses, organising practice opportunities and building a network.

Special needs

Pursuing higher education isn’t that obvious for you because of an impairment or because you combine it with a family, top sport, a job or your own company? Your care coach can help you apply for education- and exam facilities. This way, pursuing higher education is feasible. Do you need a special status (education and examination facilities for disorders or learning disabilities, individual circumstances or a work, entrepreneur or top-class sports status)? Schedule an appointment by sending an email to your diversity coach.

Equal opportunities

Reasonable accommodations

Each student deserves the chance to bring out the best in themselves. Artevelde University of Applied Sciences supports certain target groups by recognising a special status. Students with a special status may receive reasonable accommodations that aim at overcoming the obstacles created by their specific situation.

The following categories of students may apply for reasonable accommodations related to their courses and examinations:

  • Persons with disabilities: they are entitled to appropriate modifications;
  • Top athletes;
  • Practitioners of the arts;
  • Student representatives of Artevelde University of Applied Sciences, Association, VLOR and VVS;
  • Students with a political mandate;
  • Working students;
  • Student entrepreneurs, including prospective student entrepreneurs;
  • Students in other individual circumstances.

Accommodations for teaching and learning activities may include class attendance, study materials, tasks, assignments, bachelor's thesis and internships, or the entire study track and study programme. Accommodations regarding assessment activities may relate to the movement and distribution of exams.

Procedure

To obtain reasonable accommodation, the student must submit a request via the digital registration system to the diversity coach and the programme director following the procedures in the Special Status Guide. The student adds the necessary documents to his request to prove that he/she belongs to one of these target groups. The programme director examines the application's merits and decides whether or not to allow the student the facilities or reasonable modifications.

The study programme director informs the student in writing of the decision as soon as possible, no later than 30 calendar days after the application has been submitted. The decision to allow reasonable accommodations is binding for all members of the university college's teaching, administrative and technical staff.

Special status guide

Students deserve the opportunity to make the most of themselves. Therefore, Artevelde University of Applied Sciences Ghent supports certain student groups by recognising special status (Art. 46-47 Study Contract 2022-2023). Students with a disability, working students, top athletes, students with a political mandate, student entrepreneurs, student artists and representatives are eligible for special status. A student may also apply for a special status in case of other individual circumstances.

Students with a special status can receive reasonable accommodations that aim to overcome the obstacles created by their situation.

Part 1 of the guide gives general information about the special status, the application procedure and reasonable accommodations. Part 2 describes the guidelines concerning the specific process for each target group.

*For these disabilities, including developmental disorders, the general practitioner (GP) can reaffirm the diagnosis previously made by a specialist. After all, it is not within the competence of the family physician to make that diagnosis himself. This does not apply to psychiatric disorder. There, because of the often temporary nature of the disability, the competent expert is best placed to make or reaffirm the diagnosis and to give advice on support needs.
