We distinguish eight thematic lines of expertise: professional growth for tomorrow's professional, the young creators of tomorrow, excelling in inclusion, sustainable organisational development, future classrooms, powerful language learning environments, the broad school, and accessible sport and exercise.
Learning and developing school together
Agile schools with passionate teams today deal with educational challenges resiliently. The key? Work together and learn together. But how can you stimulate that? What kind of leadership and school polic y is needed for this? And how do you keep it feasible? With ‘Learning and developing school together’, we want to understand what are the factors that contribute to the growth and retention.
Healthy exercise
Regular exercise improves and protects our physical and mental health. It contributes to a higher quality of life and ensures that every individual can better participate in society. Within this research programme, we focus on more physical exercise in healthcare, at the workplace, and at school. By listing needs and thresholds concerning exercising in consultation with the end user, and by developing purposive sustainable actions, we want to have an impact on the health and quality of life of everyone who has insufficient physical exercise.
Future classroom
More and more schools are using a broad variety of modern technologies in their (innovative) didactics. Online learning platforms, cloud applications, book widgets, blended learning and more belong to the daily teaching practice. And then there is the rise of artificial intelligence like ChatGPT. Via this programme, we research how we can support teachers in their digital growth.
Powerful language learning environments
In assessment tests and international comparative research, in recent years the Flemish students perform less well in terms of language skills. Our educational field needs more guidance to stimulate language development of students on all levels. In this programme, we research how we can help individual teachers and school teams to improve the students' language skills through didactic strong language education, a strategic, purposive language policy, and a motivating reading environment beyond the school walls.
Diversity and inclusion in education
Children and youths are different in so many ways, this is terms of possibilities, sex and gender. They have diverse backgrounds socially as well as culturally. Those things determine how much opportunities they get in school and in society. Teachers and other professionals do not always feel capable to deal with all those differences in their group. This research checks what is required for a positive view on diversity and for optimal support of the class practice, with attention to the perspective of students and parents.
Young makers: learning environments that focus on transformative learning
We are facing big challenges that require a new approach (for instance climate change, migration, etc.), and education plays a vital role in this. It does not only concern what you learn, but how you learn too. That is why we must transform education into a place where we train the ‘changemakers’ of tomorrow, people who can really make a difference in a world that is changing fast.

We engage in diverse forms of collaboration with our professional sector for research and innovation. Varying in intensity, flows of financing, term, and finality: Collaborative Research Agreements, collaborations via co-financing or with external project funding, collaboration via participation in design sessions, advisory committees, etc. For future research projects we are constantly looking for partners active in the sector. RouteZ: self-directed learning professionalisation tool
Artevelde UAS, Scholengroep 20, and Scholengroep Adite joint hands in the development of a professionalisation tool for school teams to support teachers in their teaching practice with respect to self-directed learning in a powerful learning environment.

BLES – learning and playing outdoors
BLES builds playgrounds in co-creation with students and teachers. Via natural, dynamic, and adventurous elements, we research how we can challenge children and adults to play and learn.
Waddist app
Artevelde UAS and De Ambrassade created the Waddist app. Children and youths from 12 to 30 years old can use this app to share their thoughts, feelings, and experiences every day. There is a lot of talk about youths, but not so much with them. Waddist wants to change this.
VRIJPLAATS
Our VRIJPLAATS is a research space that builds bridges between education and society. In our central workplace on campus Kattenberg, we provide a room for consultation and meeting. We strive for co-creation where every team member, whether it is a student, lecturer, or external partner, has an equal voice.

Artevelde UAS has diverse labs that each focus on the desires and needs of a specific knowledge area, and that let you discover the latest technologies and innovations. Our experts will work with you on a specific question, formulate practical recommendations, and develop custom prototypes. These labs are open spaces with room for experimenting, co-creation, and creativity.
